 Those all sound like plausible implementations, even though I fail to
 understand why they would be better than having a `"family"` and an
 `"effective_family"` field.  Let's try to retain backwards compatibility
 if we can, because that allows us to deploy new features immediately vs.
 having to wait for 1 or 2 months for clients to be updated.
