 Here's a possible hint. I expect your /usr/share/tor/tor-service-defaults-
 torrc says
 {{{
 DataDirectory /var/lib/tor
 }}}

 So why are you messing with /var/tor? (and where did it come from anyway
 -- perhaps from the other init script.)
