They did:
1) OpenWRT runs in the router and is not vulnerable to any of the issues
that your desktop/laptop computer has.
2) Linux/*BSD/Tails/Whonix runs on your desktop/laptop and comes with a
decent firewall and is not vulnerable to most of the issues that Windows
has.

If you really must run Windows software see also
3) VMWare (run Windows in a restricted VM)
4) Wine (run Windows or its programs with restrictions in Linux)
5) Parallels (run Windows and its software on Macs)
