Until someone from the EFF responds, here are my thoughts based on past
conversations with them. The EFF feels they are in a better position
to defend exit relay operators than put themselves in the same
position. They have done a lot to support tor through fiscal
sponsorship in 2005, creating our logo and initial graphics, defending
relay operators, FOIA requests related to tor and staff, legal support
for tor staff and contractors, their surveillance self-defense site
(https://ssd.eff.org/), and now their tor challenge.
Running one exit node does help. However, defending others running them
while creating hundreds more is a far better use of their resources.
