why is tor traffic volume down the last few days?

     It appears to me that overall traffic volumes throughout the tor server
network have dropped steeply in the past few days.  My first hint of this
came three or four days ago and was the declining "bandwidth" numbers reported
by my tor server in its own descriptor updates.  However, repeated skimming of
the torstatus page shows lower "bandwidth" reports just about everywhere
except maybe for servers that normally report low traffic levels (say, under
40-50 Kb/s).
     Does anyone have an idea what might have caused this reduction in tor
traffic?
