 Long term: Would it be worth looking at a new add-on to fix this kind of
 usability problem? There are a lot of websites which give similar 'paper
 cuts' (e.g. #33457) and maybe pushing it into an add-on would be safer and
 easier for long term development?

 I suspect Firefox users with custom privacy settings also hit these paper
 cuts (although less frequently) and they might also be motivated to help
 with add-on development.
