 It seems to be happening  not only for .onion: I can also reproduce with
 bad `.com` hostnames and a non-tor SOCKS5 proxy (mitmproxy). I assume that
 it happens whenever the SOCKS5 proxy fails immediately. Also, when this
 happens in Tor Browser the circuit display does not appear, which I think
 is being caused by this.
