 Thanks!  This approach looks potentially sound to me.

 I've made a backport branch as `bug29819_035` with a PR as
 https://github.com/torproject/tor/pull/1614.

 I've made a branch merging that to master as `bug29819_043` with a PR as
 https://github.com/torproject/tor/pull/1613 . The merge is clean; this is
 just for CI.
