Comment:

 Well, we shouldn't take a crash in this case; we should exit with a
 reasonable message.

 That said, I seem to recall that we did some work in this case for #31091,
 #31810, and so on, which are fixed in 0.4.2.x.  Does the latest 0.4.2.x
 release (0.4.2.4-rc) still have this bug?
