Comment (by monmire):
> gk asked: Does this happen with a clean, new Tor Browser 8 (you could
drag one to your desktop and start Tor Browser from there for testing
purposes?
Yes, this (1000 Wide x 0998 High) happens with a clean, new Tor Browser
8.0, 8.0.1, and 8.5a2.
> gk asked: And previously, with Tor Browser 7 this was a non-issue?
Yes, with Tor Browser 7.5.6 (and earlier Tor Browser versions) this was a
non-issue. With Tor Browser 7.5.6 (and earlier Tor Browser versions), the
default Tor Browser-window size is 1000 Wide x 1000 High.
> gk asked: Which macOS system are you on?
macOS 10.10.5, iMac desktop computer
monmire requests: Please request that Tor Project immediately release a
new Tor Blog warning all Tor Browser 8.0.1 and 8.5a2 clients on macOS
desktop computers that the default Tor Browser-window size on macOS
desktop computers now apparently is different from the default Tor
Browser-window size on Windows and Linux desktop computers.
monmire asks: What is the default Tor Browser 8.0.1 and 8.5a2-window size
supposed to be on macOS, Linux, and Windows desktop computers—1000 x 1000,
1000 x 0998, 900 x 900, 832 x 830, or some other random sizes? Apparently,
Tor Project publishes no documentation for macOS, Windows, and Linux users
needing such information, except for the following documentation:
- The Design and Implementation of the Tor Browser [DRAFT]
- 4.6 Cross-Origin Fingerprinting Unlinkability
- Specific Fingerprinting Defenses in the Tor Browser
- 7. Monitor, Widget, and OS Desktop Resolution Implementation Status:
- "As an alternative to zoom-based solutions we are testing a
different approach in our alpha series that tries to round the browser
window at all times to a multiple 200x100 pixels."
monmire asks: Beginning with Tor Browser 8.0, is the preceding
fingerprinting-defense specification of "a multiple 200x100 pixels"
unachievable or no longer a Tor Project priority?
monmire asks: are Tor Browser 8.0.1 and 8.5a2 now dangerous for macOS
desktop computer users because adversaries more easily can identify,
track, and deanonymize macOS desktop users separately from Windows and
Linux desktop users due to differences in the default Tor Browser-window
sizes on macOS, Windows, and Linux desktop computers?
monmire asks: Is the size difference between the default Tor Browser-
window size on macOS desktop computers on one side and Windows and Linux
desktop computers on the other side indicative of Tor Project plans to
drop support for Tor Browser on macOS?
monmire asks: Does Tor Project recommend Tor Browser clients using macOS
desktop computers, needing to preserve their anonymity and protect their
privacy, discard macOS and instead use Windows or Linux desktop computers
because, beginning with Tor Browser 8.0, the default Tor Browser-window
size is different on macOS desktop computers in comparison with Tor
Browser clients using Windows and Linux desktop computers?
