 The alias receives incoming mail at torproject.org's mailserver (to
 gabe at torproject.org), and then sends mail to wherever the alias says (to
 gaba at riseup.net).

 If you want to send mail with a From: line saying gaba at torproject.org, you
 need to use a mailserver that will let you send those mails.

 For example, I run my own mailserver, and I can write whatever I like on
 the From: line when I send mails. For example, I could send mail as
 gaba at torproject.org if I wanted.

 So if you want to send mails using gaba at torproject.org as your From line,
 you need to find a mailserver that is willing to send them.

 It sounds like you're using riseup as your mailserver? And riseup doesn't
 want to send these mails? I'd start by looking there.
