Comment:

 ok so this branch seems good to go although now Github is complaining of
 merge conflict (because of the huge ongoing refactoring!).

 I'm putting this one in `merge_ready` but @asn if you have a chance to
 provide a new one rebased on latest master, might help nickm if the
 conflicts are too complicated.
