Comment:

 It seems Firefox ESR 52.8.0 is built using gtk3, so this might explain why
 you don't have the same error.

 With esr60, we are going to switch to gtk3 too.

 Maybe we can improve the `start-tor-browser` script to check if all
 required libraries are available, and give an error if that's not the
 case.
