 I've merged isis's branch above, with a couple of small tweaks (see
 d8307cb0e99d28daa4011e4e9d94e3f8c56cba23 and
 af049657eb4426f4c1e7c8aa603c6303c9a884cf). Now I'll try to merge #25067.
 Let's iterate from there.
