 Hmm, I'm not yet sure whether that commit makes things better or worse.
 In any case it requires a bit of discussion, and I'd rather postpone it
 until 1.9.0 and possibly even 2.0.0 are out, if you don't mind.

 I'll wait until #22652 is resolved before rebasing, squashing, and merging
 my task-22141-3 branch.  Thanks for checking!
