 Looks like this was broken in v0.1.0b6 with,

 A new release should be available soon, but you can also just edit these
 preferences manually in,

 Preferences > Advanced > Config Editor...

 Search for `playSounds` and set them all to `true`, then the toggling in
 the UI should have an effect.
