Comment (by teor):

 Unit tests have run fine for me on several variations of configure options
 on OS X 10.10.2 i386 (and x86_64).

 As far as I can tell, it was the overflow that was causing unit test
 failures for me on i386.
 This may be because I build with clang's undefined behavior sanitizer on.
 (It makes life more interesting...)
