 It sounds like tor will not run, at least with the default settings, on
 your Mac OS 10.6 system due to the system-level modifications you made.

 Did you use custom torrc settings with the older TBB (with Vidalia)?

 You might try editing TBB.app/Data/Tor/torrc and adding a ConnLimit line,
 e.g.,

 ConnLimit 256
