 gcc.c contains the specs language
 (<http://gcc.gnu.org/git/?p=gcc.git;a=blob;f=gcc/gcc.c;hb=HEAD#l271>),
 which lets you turn CFLAGS into arbitrary program calls, including linker
 calls. Against this backdrop it may be reasonable to simply turn
 AC_TRY_COMPILE into AC_TRY_LINK.
