Comment:

 Ugh; the $ should never be mandatory, and case should never get checked.
 That's probably a bug.

 ns/id/node should cover everything that appears *in the consensus
 directory*, I think.  There should probably be alternate forms of it that
 match the complete set of nodes more completely though.
