 And I should probably point out that when `gcry_cipher_encrypt` fails, it
 scribbles over its output buffer to try to keep the caller from using
 plaintext as if it were the ciphertext.  `dmisc::encodedString()` goes to
 some trouble to make sure that it returns the plaintext anyway.
