 I came across [https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/6172 #6172]
 while implementing this.

 We're working around this for now. Once that's fixed in Tor (hopefully
 0.2.4.x) and once that meets the requirements in stem's support policy we
 should remove this hack.
