Comment:

 Your suggested instructions don't fix this, they introduce another problem
 - namely that ./configure isn't used anymore. The instructions as written
 apply to the tarball, not a git clone. Tarballs don't require the use of
 ./autogen.sh, and it actually won't work.

 The INSTALL file already contains the appropriate documentation for this.
