 Grr, snarl.  See 5f4b127a97d38556f7b60bdffc490872f054d8dc for the fix and
 the explanation.  Not a fun bug.  The next person who wants to redefine
 autoconf internal functions needs to post bond, forfeitable on the first
 bug caused thereby.
