 (Does this still happen with bufferevents disabled?  I'm inferring that
 bufferevents are enabled because one of the warning messages refers to
 connection.c:3152, which is bufferevent-only code.  I don't know how
 bufferevents could cause _this_ bug, but it would be good to rule them
 out.)
