I think a background with subtle texture will look better than just a
plain color.

Would it be better if we had a vertical design (where the content part of
the page stretches from the top to the bottom of the monitor) instead?
Then again, most of the pages will probably have quite a bit of content,
so this might not be a problem for most users.
