 Perhaps related, I've noticed the same thing on freebsd and debian
 testing. It seems that the request to check.torproject.org is started
 before aurora's first browser window/tab loads. On a slow circuit, this is
 holding up the display of the overall aurora interface (aka the browser)
 to the user.

 My steps to troubleshoot are going to be to use strace to track the start
 and --debug option to start-tor-browser.sh and see what's going on.
