 I looked through the logs and didn't find any of the warnings that we put
 in 15 months ago, except for lots of messages saying "Overwriting existing
 descriptor file ...":

 That's not unusual, because we're not checking whether we already have a
 descriptor file and simply overwriting it. This might not be the smartest
 thing we could do, but I'd rather not want to mess with this now, because
 it might have unexpected side effects. The whole descriptor-storing
 business needs an overhaul. However, given that this log message is
 unrelated to the bug, I'll close this ticket. If it ever comes back, the
 log messages might help us track it down.
