Comment:

 The current commits look fine.  Tests and checks pass.

 As the the open questions above existed for a while their discussion can
 be transferred to the API overhaul ticket #19640 (in 1.9.0).  I'll add a
 comment there in  a sec.

 All else is fine to be released in 1.8.0.
